Tools and Tiers

A crafting table gives you a 3x3 grid, and a pickaxe uses most of it: two sticks stacked in the center column, with three units of one material filling the top row. The material is what sets the tier — planks for wooden, cobblestone for stone, an iron ingot for iron, a gold ingot for golden, or a diamond for diamond. Netherite doesn't have its own crafting recipe; instead, a diamond pickaxe is upgraded to netherite on a smithing table, using a netherite ingot and a netherite upgrade template.

Six materials exist in total, in increasing order of cost: wood, gold, stone, iron, diamond, netherite. Cost and usefulness don't line up neatly, though — gold is expensive and mines slowly for its tier, which is exactly what the next two paragraphs are about.

When a pickaxe is the correct tool for the block in front of it, its material sets a speed multiplier: wooden is 2x, stone is 4x, iron is 6x, diamond is 8x, netherite is 9x, and gold, despite being the weakest fighting weapon, is the fastest miner of all at 12x. Using the wrong tool category entirely — a sword or an axe on a block that wants a pickaxe — cuts your speed by 70% instead of applying any tier bonus at all.

That 12x gold number surprises a lot of players, and it's the whole reason gold pickaxes exist despite gold's poor durability: for short bursts of fast mining where durability doesn't matter, nothing beats it.

Speed is only half the story. Every ore also has a minimum pickaxe tier it needs just to drop anything at all, completely separate from how fast you mine it. A wooden pickaxe mines coal and plain stone. Stone unlocks iron, copper and lapis lazuli. Iron unlocks redstone, gold, diamond and emerald. Diamond (or netherite) is required for obsidian and, in the Nether, ancient debris.

Go below an ore's required tier and the block still breaks — you just get nothing for it. This is the single most common early mistake: swinging a stone pickaxe at diamond ore, watching it vanish, and walking away with an empty hand.
